Employers in Minnesota shed 11,800 jobs in December, according to employment figures released by the state’s Department of Employment and Economic Development.

Minnesota has now lost 55,400, or 2%, of its jobs in the past year, matching the nationwide rate of job losses.

Minnesota’s unemployment rate reached 6.9% in December, the highest since 1984; but still lower than the national unemployment rate of 7.2%.

One of the few bright spots was in the education and health services sector, which gained 4,000 positions in December, and 11,000 jobs for the past year.
