american-airlines-logoUnited Airlines, on Wednesday, said it will cut another 1,000 jobs in an effort to reducing overhead costs.

The airline cut 1,500 jobs during the second quarter of last year. Those who will be affected are management and domestic, salaried staff.

This cut will bring the total layoffs to nearly 2,500 jobs. That’s nearly 30% since the beginning of 2008.

Some of the cuts have already happened, the airline says.

Soaring fuel prices have made it difficult for the airlines to stay out of the red, and extensive lay offs as well as new fees for travelers have reflected that.

“The reduction in oil prices and jet fuel prices has been a welcome benefit to the airlines but the floor has fallen out of air travel,” said Harlan Platt, a finance professor and airline expert at Northeastern University of Business Administration.

UAL Corp, United Airlines parent company, reported a loss during the fourth quarter. They blamed it partly on fuel prices and ill-timed fuel hedges. American Airlines parent company, AMR Corp. also posted a loss in the fourth quarter.
