The city of Sacramento, the capital of the state of California, may cut 429 full-time employees, of which 297 are currently filled.

A major part of the proposed cuts will come from police and fire departments, with 67 full-time police positions and 44 full-time fire positions on the line.

The proposal will be discussed by the Sacramento City Council on Tuesday. The goals of the cuts are to recover costs and reduce staffing for the city of Sacramento.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said earlier in the month that he’s considering taking a pay freeze for the next fiscal year and that he could be asking his staff members to take furloughs.
