Even as the recession claims more and more jobs, and more and more people go on unemployment, veterinarians and those in the veterinary sciences find that their business is doing just fine, and possibly even growing.

People in the United States are increasingly treating their pets just like any other member of the family.  In 2006, Americans spent $24.5 billion on health care for animals.  That figure is double the amount spent in 1996.  Such care means animals are living longer and longer, which in turn means more and more annual visits to the vet.  In his book, “150 Recession-Proof Jobs,” Lawrence Shatkin lists vet technicians ad number two.  Veterinarians themselves came in at number four on the list.

Veterinary medicine can also be a very lucrative career.  Payscale.com has the median salary of a veterinarian coming in between $57,402 (for someone with less than a year of experience) and $79,493 (for someone who has been practicing for 20 years or more).
