The Commercial Appeal, a newspaper in Memphis, Tennessee, has laid off 18 employees, effective as of March 12 according to sources in the industry. Sources also report their could be more layoffs coming in June.

The newspaper reduced its workforce in November by 57 people through retirements, resignations, and layoffs. The July before, 55 people were laid off.

In August of 2008, the Commercial Appeal employed 700 people. Numbers provided by the Memphis Business Journal indicated that the Commercial Appeal employed 840 individuals in 2005.

The E.W. Scripps Co., parent company of The Commercial Appeal , reported a loss of $19 million in the fourth quarter of 2008, after posting earnings of $44.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2007.
