Croton Harmon High SchoolNew York’s Croton-Harmon School District is cutting a number of educational, clerical and support staff positions. Ten job cuts are being proposed.

Superintendent of Schools Marjorie Castro spoke of “hard choices” in crafting a budget that would meet approval with taxpayers. She said without personnel and programming cuts, the budget increase would have been 4.23% — “obviously too high in these difficult economic times.”

Two middle school reading teaching positions in the “Academic Intervention Services,” and part-time staffers in other positions are seeing their hours trimmed back. Part-time positions are also being cut in English, social studies, math and science at Croton-Harmon High School. Two typing jobs are being eliminated, as well as a groundskeeping job. A sixth-grade teaching position is also being cut.

Some modified athletic programs are also being dropped.

Castro said the district had to cope with a loss of $300,000 in state aid, as well as paying out another $800,000 on health insurance. In addition, enrollment has been climbing.
