100 Teachers Recieve Layoff Notices In San Diego County
Post Views 4More than 100 middle and high school teachers in the Sweetwater Union High School District of San Diego County, California will receive tentative layoff notices. The biggest cuts will be in English, Social Studies, and Physical Education departments.
The measure authorizing the notices passed 3-2. Trustees Jim Cartmill, Bertha Lopez and Arlie Ricasa voted yes. Pearl Quiñones and Greg Sandoval voted against it.
In order to balance its budget that begins July 1, Sweetwater Union High School District has to cut spending by $11.6 million dollars.
Notices will go out to 25 social studies teachers, 24 English teachers, 22 physical education teachers, 15 counselors, 13 Spanish teachers, eight art teachers and a nurse. Other part-time positions combined equal one other eliminated job.
The district has until May 15 to find a way to avoid layoffs. It is offering an early-retirement incentive that, if accepted by enough employees, could make layoffs unnecessary, district officials said.
