New MexicoUnemployment is up in New Mexico, but the state continues to have a lower jobless rate than the rest of the country.

According to the Department of Workforce Solutions, the unemployment rate rose to 5.1% in January, up from 4.7% in December and 3.7% a year ago.

The national unemployment is now 8.1%, the Department of Labor said this week.

This is the first time the state has reported negative job growth since June 1991.

Only three industries saw job growth in New Mexico since last year: education and health services, with 4,500 jobs; government, with 2,200 jobs, many in tribally owned casinos; and mining & logging, with 600 jobs.

Albuquerque has lost 3,400 jobs since January 2008.
