Oracle’s Sun Purchase May Doom Jobs

OracleRedwood City, California-based Oracle’s purchase of rival Sun Microsystems, announced today, could doom thousands of jobs at the companies’ Burlington, Massachusetts’ plants.

Oracle will buy Sun for $7.4 billion, after a deal between Santa Clara, California’s Sun and IBM failed to work out.

In 2007, Sun had 1,700 employees in Massachusetts. Software giant Oracle also employs a large but undisclosed number of workers in Burlington.

Sun Microsystems is a multinational vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information technology services, founded in 1982.

Oracle Corporation specializes in developing and marketing enterprise software products, particularly database management systems. It was founded in 1977.
