American AirlinesAmerican Airlines will cut capacity in late August, and eliminate 1,600 jobs. American will reduce capacity 5.5% on international routes, and 7.5% domestically.

The layoffs will target 40 at the carrier’s Kansas City maintenance hub, plus 300 in airport services, 50 in cargo and 1,200 in flight services.

American had 67,000 employees in March, down from 71,800 in March 2008.
