MeadWestvaco to Lay Off 70 in Texas

Richmond, Virginia-based packaging manufacturer MeadWestvaco will cut jobs from its Evadale, Texas paper mill, eliminating 45 in the next 8 weeks and 25 more by the end of the year.

The mill furloughed 36 people in April, who were brought back in June. The mill employs 775.

In January, the company announced a plan to cut 2,000 jobs, or 10% of its workforce.

MeadWestvaco employs about 22,000 worldwide, and in the first nine months of 2008 earned $106 million on $5.04 billion in revenue.
