Detroit Laying Off 230 Munincipal Employees

Facing steep budget deficits and a shortfall in cash, Detroit is laying off 230 city employees as of October 2nd. Half of these will come from the city’s transportation department, where 113 bus drivers will be let go and bus routes will be trimmed. The remainder of the lay offs are spread out over several departments.

Detroit has already let go of 206 employees since May. Mayor Dave Bing says Detroit needs to cut its 13,500 person workforce by at least 10 percent.
