unhappyteacher_160x120Washington DC laid off 388 school employees, including more than 200 teachers, on Friday. At the same time, struggling security company Hawk One, which supplied security guards for the 127 public schools in the district, went out of business. Schools in DC opened this morning without security guards and short on staff as a result. Only one major incident was reported, a skirmish between students and the police at McKinley Technology High School.

The layoffs come as a result of a $43.9 million deficit in the operating budget of the DC school system.
