pennsylvaniaflag_160x120West Penn Allegheny Health Systems in southwest Pennsylvania has terminated 213 full-time positions, the company announced through a press release Thursday.

“This action today is part of the process of restructuring ourselves to succeed in the long term,” the statement read. “This is a very difficult decision for our organization, but a necessary action given the economic challenges that we and all healthcare providers locally and throughout the country are facing in the current recession.”

Workers at all six West Penn hospitals and the corporate offices are affected by the cuts. West Penn reported its second straight quarterly profit in December, but CEO Christopher Olivia indicated more still had to be done to improve operations.
