news-paper-160-120The largest newspaper in Oregon has laid off about 5% of its staff, 37 workers in total.

The Oregonian gave grim news to their employees on Wednesday and severance packages were offered to the displaced workers.

The bulk of the losses occurred in the news department, although accounting, advertising, and circulation suffered losses as well.

The Portland-based newspaper has been hurt by the general economic downturn and by the advertising trend to make greater use of the internet.

The Oregonian has numbered its staff at 750 following the layoffs, of which 200 are part of the news department.
