We reported late last month that Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman announced likely job cuts across all city departments this year. After a four hour hearing yesterday the Las Vegas City Council tentatively approved next year’s budget and 146 city employees will lose their jobs by June as the Council tries to make up for a $70 million revenue shortfall.

The council will give its final approval in Mid May but in the meantime it is exploring other options to prevent layoffs. Mayor Goodman has proposed terminating all city employees and asking each of them as a condition of being rehired to accept a shorter work week to help keep the city’s budget afloat.  Goodman has asked city attorney Brad Jerbic to look into the legality of such an action.
