white houseThe White House Council of Economic Advisers said Wednesday that the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act has created or saved between 2.2 and 2.8 million jobs through the first quarter of 2010.

According to the report, the $787 billion economic stimulus bill has provided more than $110 billion in tax relief to lower- and middle-income families and $90 billion in unemployment benefits and food assistance through March 2010. The report goes on to say that without these provisions disposable income would have fallen substantially in 2009 and consumer spending wouldn’t have rebounded as well as it did.

The report also reveals that 22 million people, or about 14 percent of the labor force, have directly benefited from unemployment benefits provided in the Recovery act.
