The San Marino Unified School District no longer has to follow through with laying of teachers that were previously given notice, thanks to $3 million in private donations.

Taking into account the recent donation, the affluent California city can now account for around 40 percent of their budget as being provided from sources other than the state.

District Superintendent Gary Woods says they are considered, “a semiprivate school district.”

The “Refuse to Lose” donation campaign was a response to state funding cuts and got students, teachers, administrators, and parents to mobilize and generate $3 million in just nine weeks.
