The AP reported yesterday that as a result of teacher’s unions agreeing to twelve furlough days over the course of the next two years, 525 additional City of Los Angeles elementary school teachers will have classrooms to return to this fall.  Due to budget shortfalls, the City still plans to still lay off 1,000 teachers effective July 1.

Although the Los Angeles Unified School District initially contemplated letting go of over 3,000 teachers, nurses, counselors and librarians, the City has thus far managed to come up with the cash to rescind more than 2,000 of those lay off notices.  According to the Contra Costa Times, union officials are currently in further negotiations that could potentially save an additional 200 positions.
