United Auto Workers members at a Saginaw, Michigan area plant have the chance to lock in the creation of some five hundred jobs in exchange for pay cuts, reports the Chicago Tribune.  By agreeing to cuts of up to $8 dollars an hour, workers at the Nexteer Automotive plant, formerly part of Delphi, can guarantee the creation of 200 new jobs and the elevation of about 300 part time workers to full time status.

If the concession is ratified, skilled workers would take the greatest hit to their paychecks – 8 bucks an hour, while production line workers would lose $2.50 an hour.  Those promoted to full-time will earn $14.50 an hour.  New hires would earn $12.  A half a loaf is better than no loaf, as the saying goes.  Solidarity brothers and sisters.
