A $24 billion measure that could save the jobs of as many as 300,000 teachers faces an uncertain future in the senate, where many object to its cost. The federal aid has been proposed in response to budget crises in dozens of states nationwide.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has long supported the aid, and on Saturday President Obama publicly called for congress to pass the measure.

Republicans and some Democrats in the Senate have called the aid fiscally irresponsible, pointing to the ballooning national deficit and wondering aloud where the funds would come from.
