desert-1Employees from the Desert Sands Unified School District have something to smile and frown about. In lieu of layoffs, employees at the district will take a 1.75 percent cut to their salaries. The wage cuts will save the nearly 120 employees facing layoffs.

This will be the second time in two years that Desert Sands Employees will see their wages cut. The current cuts, combined with the cuts incurred in the ’09-’10 school year, equal a 3.5 percent cut in salary

As has been the trend, retirements also decreased the number of layoffs. Around 40 district employees retired this year.

Not all jobs were saved, however. Five bus drivers and six custodians will still be cut.
