georgiaflag_160x120Some badly-needed jobs are coming to Dalton, Ga., according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Home to one of the nation’s highest unemployment rates, the city will gain at least 45 jobs through the opening of a new office for the Georgia Department of Labor.

Workers will be hired to process disability claims for state-residents that apply for Social Security Administration programs. The Journal-Constitution reports the office will be the fifth of its kind in the state.

“We could’ve placed those jobs in Stone Mountain or Athens, but we decided they would have a greater impact in an area of the state that is underserved and has been hit hardest by the economic downturn,” said Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond.

According to the report. Dalton’s unemployment rate was 11.8 percent in June.

Those interested in the positions can attend a job fair Thursday in Dalton at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center.
