In July of this year, Northrop Grumman Corp. informed the state of Louisiana that it was planning to close its Avondale shipyards over the course of two years, eventually laying off approximately 5,000 workers. The first of those received pink slips today. Northrop Grumman announced about 200 layoffs today.
Company spokesman Bill Glenn was all business, noting the initial layoffs and adding “additional layoffs are expected this calendar year.”
Meanwhile, representatives from the AFL-CIO are mounting a campaign to keep the shipyards from closing: “Our goal,” said union rep Jim Seidel, “is to put as much political and legislative emphasis on saving this shipyard, that we can do.”Layoffs Begin at Avondale by Harrison Barnes
