verizon_160x120Verizon plans to add 500 jobs at its Elgin call center in South Carolina in preparation for increased volume expected with the addition of the iphone to Verizon’s network.  Previously the iphone was only available for AT&T customers, but Verizon customers can begin preordering the iphone 4 starting today.

The new jobs will start out at $27,000 per year and will offer some benefits including tuition assistance and emergency day care.

Verizon was founded in 1983 as Bell Atlantic and one was of the “Baby Bells” that emerged after a federal judge ordered the breakup of AT&T in 1984.  Today Verizon employs over 220,000 people worldwide.
