The 13-member board of directors for 2012 at the Society for Human Resource Management has recently elected three new HR executives. This move has been applauded by people across the country and in the industry because experts claim the board was missing executives with experienced in the HR industry.

“We were pleased that three HR executives joined the board,” says Mike Losey, former SHRM president and CEO and member of the SHRM Members for Transparency. “But when you add up all the members with HR certification and experience, we still have the lowest number of HR-certified professionals on the board in SHRM’s history.”

There are four members of the Society for Human Resource Management board of directors currently certified by the Human Resources Certification Institute. The Human Resources Certification Institute is the country’s standard when it comes to evaluating companies’ human resources practices.

The three new executives are Coretha M. Rushing, who is the chief human resources officer for Equifax Inc.; Brian D. Silva, who is the senior vice president of human resources and administration for Fresenius Medical Care; and Jose Tomas, who is the president of Latin America and Caribbean and global chief people officer for Burger King Corp. Silva and Tomas both are certified by the Human Resources Certification Institute.

The group was thinking about sponsoring a write-in candidate to be elected to the board of directors but decided against it after leaders of the Society for Human Resource Management told them they would be satisfied with the HR credentials of the other nominees. Group members met with leaders of the association multiple times in October in an effort to fix some issues, one of which was the lack of board members that had HR experience.

“We are pleased to welcome these three highly experienced human resource executives to the SHRM Board of Directors. Their expertise—experiences with business strategy and the global marketplace and an understanding of a changing workforce—will help guide SHRM as it continues to serve the needs of its membership,” said Henry G. (Hank) Jackson, president and CEO of SHRM.

The chair-designate, Bette J. Francis, was re-elected to the same position. She has been a board member since 2007. She will also replace the current board chair, Jose A. Berrios, in 2013.

Others who were re-elected include Jorge Consuerga, a global marketing and business executive, and My-Chau Nguyen, the senior vice president of customer relationship marketing for Sirius XM Radio. These two members of the board were named in October of 2011.

The remaining re-elected members of the board include Jeffrey M. Cava, the executive vice president and chief human resources officer of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc.; Calvin W. Finch, the senior vice president and chief financial officer of CCP Inc.; James A. Kaitz, the president and CEO of the Association for Financial Professionals; Gary P. Latham, the secretary of state professor of organizational behavior at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto; and Virda M. Rhem, the director of human resources for Texas Property and Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association.
