St. Landry Parish is experiencing something a little more promising these days. It’s experiencing the lowest unemployment rate than it has in years. The Louisiana Workforce Commission is who tracks this information for the whole state. Non-farm employment seems to be doing a little better but little information is available regarding this. November is the most recent month for which information is available and it was 7.2 during that month. The numbers seem to be slowly dropping because back in October the unemployment rate was 7.8 percent, according to the Daily World.

The news that St. Landry Parish is doing so well with unemployment is an encouragement to the rest of the state.  The areas surrounding the area, such as Evangeline Parish the numbers were at around 7.4 percent in the month of November. Unfortunately, this was the highest number in the state but the number still shows signs of improving. If you are looking for the best numbers in the community, then check out Acadia Parish who had the best numbers in the region. The unemployment numbers reached an all-time low of almost 5.6 percent.

The state of Louisiana has fallen a lot in November and showed a low number of 6.5 percent. The number has been steadily falling over the past year. “Louisiana and Texas are the only two states in the southern region that have surpassed their pre-recession non-farm employment levels,” Eysink said. “All indicators are moving in the right direction,” Eysink said. “Louisiana has been adding jobs for well over a year, spurred by growth in private sector employment. Clearly, employers have recognized that Louisiana is a great place to do business.” according to LWC Executive Director Curt Eysink.

The past year the non-farm jobs have increased but so have numerous other sectors. Areas like education and healthcare have added thousands of jobs. Manufacturing has also done its share of adding jobs to the economy in Louisiana. Not to mention mining and logging jobs that has added positively to the job market. Construction, information and transportation are all in the running for adding a great number of jobs to the job market.

There are not too many sectors that are not adding jobs to the market. Government jobs are down and so are the miscellaneous jobs. Pretty much the jobs that are odd & ends are not showing up with an increase. However, the New Orleans area is still seeing a steady increase in jobs. The worst in the area is East Carroll Parish who is seeing an unemployment rate of almost 13.8 percent. It has decreased a little to the number of 13.4 percent. Which is not a huge decrease but it’s still a positive decrease in the unemployment rate. The national unemployment rate is slowly falling as well. The most recent rate in November was calculated to have a 9.3 percent average rate across the board.
