When people lose their job, they start to update their resumes, networking and searching all of the job boards for job postings. However, the thing that most people have recently been let go are really focusing on is the tactical ways to landing their next job.

They take their own skill set, location, and existing job openings as an actual given. They will forget that even a resume that has been written perfectly is not going to help land a job if there are not many opening in their city or in their industry, or if they are not fully qualified for the jobs that are available. The resulting lack of success in job hunting is just a waste a precious time, is demoralizing, and it increases the ”employment.”

As someone who is newly unemployed, you should think about how you are going to change the odds of landing a job in your industry by using your time as strategically as possible. You now have all day at your disposal, since you don’t have a job to go to anymore. Consider these 4 ways to change your resume:

1. Invest in Education:
You may have gotten skills in a certain area of expertise, though you have never had a formal education in it. Now it is time to get that certified–this will bridge the recession and you will reenter the job market with much better skills that are certified by a third party. You may never have completed your college education, so why not do that now while you’ve got some extra time to get it done?

2. Learn a New Language:
Having extra language skills is becoming more and more valuable as each day passes. If you live down in the South, then Spanish may be your best choice, up in the Northwest, you may want to learn French. As the U.S. tries to increase its exports worldwide, speaking a foreign language is going to be a great asset in any industry.

3. Perform Charity Work:
Get yourself involved, be active and feel good about it, and about yourself. If you have ever dreamed about working in a non-profit organization, then this is your perfect opportunity. In any case, you are going to meet some new people, and make some new contacts that could be helpful in landing a job. You are also telling your future employer that you kept active during your job search.

4. Consider Relocation:
The U.S. is a very country with a largely diverse base of industries and economic opportunities. Explore a new location with better job prospects in your industry.
Whatever you end up deciding to do, don’t just sit at home and apply for jobs when the odds are not in your favor. Make sure to use your time wisely by investing in your skills, or explore different places with better economic prospects. Your next hiring manager is going to appreciate the fact that you got up and got active during such a hard time.
