As the campaigns to get the nomination for president wind down and decisions have to be made about who exactly is going to get the right to run, and who is going to go home without a nomination, there is some strange behavior going on in the camp of one Newt Gingrich. Despite putting on a brave front for the media he is cutting back on a great number of his staffers. That is right Mr. Gingrich is getting ready to lay off about one third of his campaign staff in order to balance out what is a very off whack budget.

As you can imagine running for president is not an inexpensive endeavor and most campaigns carry a significant amount of debt with them. In this case the campaign actually has more debt then it does cash. According to numbers released in February Mr. Gingrich’s campaign has about  $1.55 million in debt and has about $1.54 million in cash.

The announcement of the cuts was made on Tuesday night, but no word has been given on exactly how many will be cut, what kind of cuts will be made to the staff and what benefits, if any, will be given to the staffers who are let go.

In addition Joe DeSantis, the communications director for the campaign was on Fox News recently talking about the change in campaign management and how he expects the changes will impact the change in campaign managers will make. He told the on air personalities the following:

“We think that a big part of how we succeed is getting back to core Gingrich, which is a focus on big ideas and positive solutions — having someone who is intimately aware of Newt’s policy positions and the way things are framed, and has been working with Newt for so long on the policy front. We think that having him as the campaign manager is very important,”

Now the question is, if Newt actually manages to make his way to the primary will this news cost him the nomination completely. After all, in a world where the number of people who are out of a job is a number one concern for many Americans will a candidate who would be willing to get rid of so much of his staff in the name of fiscal irresponsibility be attractive? The odds are good that even if Newt managed to win the primary these job cuts and debt could keep him out of the white house.

Not that the hands of his competition are exactly clean when it comes to getting rid of jobs. There has been a fair but of layoff scandal associated with Mitt Romeny for those of you who missed out on our earlier coverage here is an excerpt:

“Well it looks like Mr. Romney is taking flack for his job cutting behavior not only from the opposing party, but also from others in his own party. This time it was Jon Huntsman who was firing against Mr. Romney’s tactics. As a part of his primary campaign he has been pointing out to workers and voters in the state that Romney has made layoffs happen in the past.

“Jon Huntsman’s campaign said Wednesday that jobs lost at a company managed by rival Mitt Romney counter his claims of being a job creator,” a reporter from the Associated Press told its readers. “Huntsman’s campaign and allies said Romney’s venture capital firm oversaw more than 100 layoffs in New Hampshire while it eventually reaped millions in profits.”

That could cause particular problems for the New Hampshire primary elections, which will take place in January. Mr. Romney has been working hard to give the impression to voters that he is a man who can create jobs for the people, and these multiple reminders of his willingness to let go of staff in order to make a large profit for the management of the company is not really compatible with that idea at all.”
