When it comes to the world of public education job cuts are never an easy thing to make. After all every cut to a teacher in the classroom will not just impact the overall economy of the area that the teachers were once working in, but it will usually also mean a cutback in some kind of education. It could mean a cut to the number of classes that are offered to the students, relieving the school of arts programs or daily physical education. It could mean in increase in the number of students per classroom, meaning that there will be less time for each student to get one on one attention from their teacher.

It could mean a lot of things.

For the time being we will not know the extent of the impact that the new cuts to the Pontiac School District. The school is looking to cut back on a serious number of staffers in order to make ends meet. The Owens Elementary School is one of the schools that are going to feel the brunt of the cuts. The school district is going to have to cut about 95 employees, before the 30th of June, in order to shore up the hole that they are facing in their budget. The whole is about $24 million.

While there was some general information about the number of people who had to be laid off in order to make things work the staffers only got layoff notices this week. So tensions are running high and the staffers are going to find out with a small amount of notice time that they need to find themselves a new job, as their positions will no longer be available.
Of course these changes are nothing compared to the job cuts being made in the state of California. For those of you who are not up to speed on the job cuts to their education system here is an excerpt that will get you up to date in no time at all:

“It looks like things are getting much, much worse for the schoolteachers in the state of California. We have been talking a lot, in the last couple of weeks and months about the kinds of cuts that are being made to the schools in the state. In a lot of cases those cuts are being made in generic terms we know how many workers are going to be let go, but we do not know how many of them will be classroom teachers. Today we had some light shed on those numbers.
According to information released by the California Teachers Association an estimated 19,500 classroom teachers were given layoff notices over the past couple of weeks. The layoff notices had to be given by the 15th of March in order to be legal under the laws of the state of California. So if an educator did not get a layoff notice by that date then they are free and clear, at least until next years deadline.
The cuts, which are coming because of the need to cut 20 Billion in funding from the state education budget. Unless the schools get a tax increase from voters in the near future, which is on the ballet, the schools will have to make these cuts, which average out to about $370 per student in the state. The only good news for schools is that the number of enrolled students at California schools is, depending on where you live, either staying stable or shrinking.”
