On the second day of Creative Week, a group of ad professionals who left big agencies to strike out on their own, discussed what they thought of the traditional ad industry.

Jae Goodman, who is now creative director at CAA Marketing is of the view that the main problem with the big ad agencies is that they suffer from “institutional knowledge”. He is of the view that the big agencies are part of an ecosystem which they are not interested in changing. “You have essentially a $100 billion cartel built up” as Goodman puts it.

The other panelists were Gerry Graf, who now runs his startup BGF 9000, Ty Montague and Colleen DeCourcy. Graf walked out on the panel when Colleen said “”I think creative people are interesting,” and then added “I think creative departments are shit.”

Everybody thought he was just kidding but he did not return, apparently very offended that somebody, most of all, a fellow ad professional would think that creative departments are useless. The panel continued after he left and closed up with him.
