Most of us are not familiar with the Texas Municipal Power Agency; after all they are not a household name in many households. For those of you who are not familiar with the company, here is a look at how the Texas Municipal Power Agency describes itself, “Texas Municipal Power Agency (TMPA) is a power production station located outside of Bryan/ College Station, Texas. Owned by the four member cities of Bryan, Denton, Garland and Greenville; TMPA provides efficient, clean electrical power at an affordable price to help communities prosper. TMPA operates as a non-profit municipality. We’re also known as Gibbons Creek Steam Electric Station (GCSES). TMPA employs more than 150 people dedicated to safe, clean power generation. Our employees are active in the community, donating time for Habitat for Humanity, food for Twin City Mission; adopting families during the holiday season and much more.”

Well it looks like the Texas Municipal Power Agency is hoping that they can do all of that with less staff on the payrolls. The company is getting ready to cut back on a modest number of workers in order to set its budget to right. The company is getting ready to get rid of about 12 workers in order to set things to right. This is the second wave of layoffs that the company has started in the last couple of weeks.

The company is attributing the layoffs to a significant decrease in power usage during the current fiscal year. This is not the only company in this area to deal with cuts due to a decrease in usage. For those of you who missed out on coverage of cuts from another company on the supply side of the power equation here is a look that will get you up to speed in no time at all, “Alpha Natural Resources, a coal mining company, is getting ready to lay off about 150 workers as the company ramps down its production…. In a release that the company put out about the job losses the following was said, “Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. (NYSE: ANR) plans to curtail coal mining operations in its northern and southern Kentucky business units as continued market pressures and new regulations on coal-fired power plants make production from certain mines in those areas uneconomic. Alpha’s Kentucky affiliates will discontinue mining at four mines and idle two coal preparation plants in Pike and Martin counties.”

The company is going to be letter go of the workers by the end of the month. At this time they did not tie the layoffs to a specific date, though given that today is already the 18th the month, so the workers will not have to wait very long in order to find out if they are one of the ones who are going to be getting the axe, or if they will be staying on with the company. For the time being there are a lot of other unknowns as well, the company has not said what positions will be left vacant as part of the layoffs and they have not said anything about what kind of benefits, if any, they will be offering to the workers who are going to be offering to the soon to be displaced workers. In the previous wave the company cut back on roughly 20 workers.
