By now no one can have any doubt that American Airlines is in some serious fiscal distress. The company has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs after declaring bankruptcy earlier this year. There was however a lull after the immediate layoffs that may have led some people to think that the company had shed all of the jobs that they needed to in order to make things work for the current fiscal year.

If you were one of those people then you were wrong. The company is getting ready to layoff workers once again. This time it will be a much lower number, only about 63 workers, but since they are all being cut from the city of Miami theses cuts will be enough to qualify as a mass layoff action under the current federal guidelines. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the federal government defines the term, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.”

For the time being the company has not given any word on severance officers, or effective dates at the current moment.

For those of you who missed out on our coverage of the total wipe of staff the airline did in Ontario here is an excerpt, “These cuts are impacting airlines all over the world as the company gets rid of staff and terminal after terminal and actually cuts back on the number of flights that they will be offering to the public. This time the loss of jobs is coming to the workers at the Ontario International Airport. American Airlines will be cutting back on not some, but all of their staff members at the Ontario International Airport in an effort to reduce their costs. The only bright side to this layoff is that, despite the obviously high percentage of job cuts, the actual number of job cuts is not that high. The company will only be getting rid of about 18 jobs when all is said and done.”

Before that the cuts were truly massive. For those of you who didn’t catch it the first time around here is a look at the cuts of more than 1,00 workers the company made in April, “It looks like American Airlines is at it again. As a part of its recovery plan after filing  for bankruptcy the company is getting ready to cut another 1,200 people from their payrolls. The jobs to be cut are going to be primarily in the areas of airport baggage handlers and cargo management jobs. This second wave of layoffs is slamming into the company staffing this year, and if things continue on this way then they will not be the last layoffs that American Airlines perpetrates on its employees in a bid to stay in business.”
