If you like to travel then you may have heard of Book It. The company is one of the many options for making online travel arrangements. For a more detailed look at the company lets take a look at how they have chosen to describe themselves, “BookIt.com® is an online travel company determined and dedicated to becoming the leader in providing travelers with the most intuitive online booking experience full of relevant information, helpful guides and travel tips. As a web-based company, we obviously know the value of the internet – our very livelihood depends on it! We also believe in the power of the internet. That is, the power to connect people and make our lives more productive, enjoyable and convenient.”

Sadly it looks like Book It has not been doing as many bookings as they would like because they are getting ready to get rid of a number of their workers. The company is getting ready to cut back on about 80 of its workers in order to cut back on its costs. Those kinds of cuts are more then enough to qualify as a mass layoff action under the current federal guidelines.

For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the company chooses to describe itself, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days. For now the company is expecting to cut all of the jobs from the payroll in their Orlando area.

Of course this is not the only company that is dealing with serious cutbacks in the recreational sector. For those of you who missed out on our earlier coverage of other cuts to the entertainment sector here is an excerpt, “When it comes to who keeps you having a good time you may know the name of a specific place, but the odds are good that you don’t know the name of the parent company that runs that business. These kinds of hidden companies make decisions that impact a lot of employees. Gaylord Entertainment is one of those companies…. Sadly the company is getting ready to get rid of a significant portion of workers in order to put its balance book to the way that they would like it to be. The company will be cutting back on about 300 workers in order to get its books to the way that they would like it to be.” Sadly these kinds of trends mean that many workers who do not have any experience in other industries are being left out of work, and they may have problems finding new work.
