Groupon is a name that some of you may not be that familiar with when all is said and done, but for those of you who are not that familiar with the site that has made discount shopping a social affair lets begin by taking a look at how the company has chosen to describe itself, then we can talk about the job cuts that are coming to the company, “Launched in November 2008, Groupon features a daily deal on the best stuff to do, see, eat, and buy in 48 countries, and soon beyond (read: Space). We have about 10,000 employees working across our Chicago headquarters, a growing office in Palo Alto, CA, local markets throughout North America and regional offices in Europe, Latin America, Asia and around the world…Groupon grew out of a website called The Point, a website launched in November 2007 that lets you start a campaign asking people to give money or do something as a group — but only once a “tipping point” of people agree to participate. By delaying action until enough people come together to have a real impact, The Point helps consumers, employees, citizens, activists, parents — or anyone — come together and solve problems that they couldn’t solve alone.

Sadly the company is getting ready to cut back on about 80 workers in order to make its ends meet. The company is getting ready to make a serious layoff action happen, as possible a mass layoff action under the current federal guidelines. The company is not, at the current moment, confirming or denying the exacts of the layoffs. So the numbers are, for the time being, coming from reports that are citing an unknown source that is close to the company about the layoffs.

Interestingly enough the company has not said much, and chosen in its most recent blog post was about Halloween instead of about the changes that are being made to the company in order to make the company leaner and less expensive to run, “We love a good Grouposal–our customers share their engagement stories, bring a new twist to popping the question, and let us be a part of their exciting day. We can’t help but gush and spread the word of their happiness. The setting: A drizzly October evening in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Jerilyn’s love for Halloween was the inspiration behind Rosana’s flash mob surprise. Oh, and there just happened to be a Groupon for Cambridge Haunt’s Ghost Tour to provide the perfect cover.”

This is not the only technology company that  has made job cuts. For those of you who missed out on our earlier coverage of cuts at AMD here is an excerpt, “Sadly the company has chosen to make some truly massive job cuts in the near future. After some seriously disappointing results in its third quarter the company is getting ready to cut back on about 15 percent of its staff. For the time being the company has not outlined detailed plans about the job cuts, but if the job cuts impact workers in the USA then the company is likely to trigger a mass layoff action.”
