The average total plan cost and average investment expenses for 401(k) retirement plans fell slightly in 2012. 401(k) fees have been trending down over the years but the Department of Labor?s, which took effect in 2012. The average total expense for a small plan is 1.46 percent, but the range between the high and low total plan expenses is .38 percent to 1.97 percent.
