OSHA: Changing Fatalities Policy at VPP Worksites

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued a memorandum outlining immediate policy changes relating to how employers in the government’s Voluntary Protection Program will be scrutinized following workplace fatalities. Previous criticisms from the Government Accountability Office found VPP sites did not lose their “model workplace” status even after fatalities should have made them no longer eligible. The new policy creates an inspection period during which VPP status can be placed on hold for ten days following major accidents, and terminated if caused by OSHA violations. Employers will have 30 days to appeal the rulings.
