The company veteran of Wal-Mart, Doug McMillon, has spent his entire career working for Wal-Mart in various positions. From his start at a distribution center to his leadership of the U.S. and International divisions of the company, he’s proven himself to have a great understanding of what makes the company tick. Wal-Mart has been flagging in terms of sales and growth lately, especially with the rise of Amazon and other retailers focusing on their online presence. Duke, the current CEO, is going to be replaced by Mike as the new CEO this coming February. The decision was made due to his experience as well as the fact that he’d probably stay with the company for a long time coming. Someone who is experienced with the current state of affairs in the company is the likeliest path to growth, rather than trying to push the whole company into a massive overhaul. For someone as big as Wal-Mart, making a ton of drastic changes is likely to hurt them financially more than it will ever pay off. The company certainly needs to focus a little more on their online presence, as it hasn’t showed to be much of a competitor to Amazon or other retailers that specialize in it.
