Switching careers is not an easy decision to make, especially if you have been in your current one for a lengthy period. You should think long and hard about making a switch, talk to your peers, and discuss the decision with your family. We have compiled a list of steps you should utilize when considering a career change.

Find Out What You Enjoy Doing

This might seem obvious, but figuring out your likes and dislikes is a major step in the career change process. Put together a list of jobs that meet your interest and the ones that you would never consider holding. If you cannot figure this out, consider taking a career assessment online.

Perform Plenty of Research

After you figure out what interests you the most, you can begin performing your research. Find out what types of jobs fit your interests and what they require in terms of experience and daily responsibilities. The amount of research required depends on the type of job you have now and what you want to switch to in the future.

Additional Education

You will need to determine if your new career interest requires you to take any classes to further your education or training. You can often get help with this from your current job. Should you be able to use a skill at your current job, see if your current employer will pay for the training. You can also take some courses to figure out if you will like the new job or not. This can help you make an informed decision about switching careers.

Obtain Experience in Your New Career

Since you are changing careers, and starting over from the beginning, you should obtain as much experience as possible. This can include getting a part-time job on nights or weekends or volunteering. Figure out a way to gain experience so you can add it to your resume.

Find Someone Who Can Mentor You

Finding a mentor will help you immensely in the career switch. A mentor will be able to answer your questions, alleviate your fears, and help you find a career that best suits your experience and interests. The mentor could also offer some interesting and valuable contacts that could help you network for the new career.

Network, Network, Network

There is nothing more important in a career than networking. You can use your network contacts as leads for jobs, possible interviews, and so much more. Expand your network whenever you get the chance because you never know when it will come into play.
