The University of Nebraska-Lincoln plans to eliminate 21 jobs as part of $3.6-million in budget cuts. The cuts were announced by Chancellor Harvey Perlman on Tuesday.

UNL is attempting to reduce its budget by $5.2 million this year and yesterday’s announcement could be just the first step in the process, the Associated Press reports. Perlman is considering eliminating the Communications and Information Technology unit at the university’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and also reducing the funding to the Office of Research by $2 million.

According to the AP, the cuts are needed because of a reduction in state funding caused by the recession.
