A cover letter can be considered as the very first ‘meeting’ between you and the reader. It introduces you to the recruiter and does a great deal to establish a connection between the two. It is a cover letter which is read first before your resume is even looked at and you must do your best to craft a well written and polished letter in order to make that first impression. Not only this, but the reader gets a good understanding of who you are, the underlying skills you possess, and how you might contribute to the organization or company you are applying to. So in a nutshell, the purpose of a resume is by and large incomplete without a cover letter.

Certain points to be remembered while drafting your cover letter:

  • It should grab the readers attention, be brief yet informative, and well written.
  • Right from the very first lines, your cover letter must arouse immediate interest and curiosity in your credentials.
  • Have a cover which is not more than 3 to 4 paragraphs.
  • Organize the data well so that it flows in a logical and easy to read manner.
  • State selected achievements and contributions to make the cover letter impactful.
  • Demonstrate your skills and unique abilities with substantial proof.
  • Make sure the introductory lines as well as the concluding lines are highly effective and powerful.
  • You can also include those things which you wish to tell the reader but that which you cannot mention on the resume. (For instance, why you wish to leave your current position, or how you are open to relocation and so on).

Cover letters go a long way to demonstrate to employers how good you are at communication skills and the methods you employ to market yourself. Having a well written cover letter leads the reader to review your resume and so you must attach a good cover to your resume if you wish to be successful in your job search.
