Richard DaleyChicago Mayor Richard M. Daley is talking with unions, in an attempt to avoid layoffs through union concessions.

Budget cuts may compel the Windy City to lay off 1,600 workers, unless organized labor agrees to another round of pay cuts and furloughs, to eliminate a $300 million shortfall. Cops and firefighters would not be affected.

Daley has abandoned an idea to reduce garbage truck crews as a concession to unions.

On December 25th, 2010, Daley will surpass his father, Richard J. Daley, as Chicago’s longest-serving mayor.
