Detroit Public Schools Oust 33 Principals, 750 Others

Detroit Public Schools will lay off 33 principals, and reassign 37. One-quarter of the district’s schools will be affected.

The district did not renew contracts with 786 employees, which included the principals, and main office personnel. But the district intends to hire 10 new principals.

The district currently has 95,000 students, and 5,700 teachers. Fewer than 900,000 people now live in Detroit, compared with more than two million 50 years ago.
