The Oregonian, the largest newspaper in Oregon, terminated 37 workers Wednesday morning. Severance packages were offered to the affected workers, which represent about 5 percent of the paper’s staff.

Like newspapers all around the country, The Oregonian has been forced to deal with declining ad revenue as more and more businesses turn to the Internet to get the word out. According to the Associated Press, the majority of affected employees were in the news department, though other divisions including advertising, circulation and accounting also saw its staffs reduced.

Following the layoffs there are approximately 750 employees at the Oregonian with the news department employing about 200.
