About 250 employees are being laid off and 500 positions are being cut by Louisville’s Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Healthcare Inc. as part of a cost-saving plan.

The reductions are slated to occur through the end March, according to Business Journal. They will include middle- and senior-level management positions as well as support staff.

“We have a very strong organization, but we have to make this very difficult decision to preserve our financial integrity,” said Janice James, the company’s interim president and CEO.

About half of the reductions will be accomplished through attrition and the elimination of open position, James said.  JHSMH operates 71 facilities with more than 1,900 patient beds in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
