Maine Today Media has begun laying off employees, and is expected to have their staff reduced by around 50 people as early as April.

The company controls the Portland Press Herald, a newspaper local to the residents of Portland Maine. In addition to the Portland Press Herald, the company also operates the Kennebec Journal, the Morning Sentinel in Waterville, and the Maine Sunday Telegram.

A buyout plan was offered to employees and has so far had 23 people accept, some of which were in news and advertising.
