Prompted by a 33% cut in state-based aid, schools in Woodbridge New Jersey are looking to make 280 layoffs in addition to a 4% tax hike.

Superintendent John Crowe’s $182 million spending plan would privatize food and custodial services, eliminate middle school and freshman athletics, prevent curriculum updates, and see 25 teachers let go.

Addressing several hundred community members at Colonia Middle School on Tuesday evening, Crowe said, “There is nowhere to go with this budget. There are no more reductions to make. This budget has to pass — and it will pass.”

Crowe has encouraged the community to share any creative ideas that could save money.
