Authorization has been given to send layoff notices to more than 100 city employees in Hillsborough, New Jersey which would go into effect July 1.

“The Township Committee has great respect and appreciation for our employees, but this is a business decision,” Mayor Frank DelCore said during a Township Committee meeting on Tuesday. ” Quite simply, it is not that we have too many employees, instead it is that the cost of employees, salaries, health benefits, pension costs and other benefits, has grown too high for the taxpayers.”

Chairman of the Finance Committee Carl Suraci said that with an $838,000 total reduction in state aid and literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in mandated cost increases, reducing personnel costs is simply necessitated.
