A $116 million budget deficit has forced yet another major bay area city to send out layoff notices.

San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed has proposed some alternatives to the cuts, but has not received much receptiveness. Reed has pleaded for union representatives of city workers to agree to a 10 percent pay cut, but is being faced with opposition. He is now trying to modify his initial pay cut idea.

“It would be devastating. It’s hard to live on what you make right now in this time and everybody around me is losing their job,” said Magie Espinosa, a city employee.
