At the Beatrice State Development Center (BSDC) in Lincoln, Nebraska, 50 positions are being eliminated, resulting in approximately 20 layoffs.

BSDC has served citizens with mental retardation since 1887.

According to a Health and Human Services spokeswoman, the layoffs are not going to effect direct support staff. The positions targeted are ancillary and include: food services, maintenance, pharmacy, and housekeeping. The positions of around 30 employees will be internally shuffled around. It was assured by an HHS representative that the support staff will remain at a ratio ranging from one to three staff per resident, depending on the shift in question.
